Case study: reliable protection for biogas equipment
Si 14 EG
SÄKAPHEN’s heat-cured linings and proven application procedures deliver outstanding corrosion protection, safeguarding equipment even in highly aggressive environments, including biogas handling.
Companies operating equipment in biogas plants are well aware of the challenges involved: elevated temperatures, combined with corrosive components such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), create extremely harsh service conditions. These factors can rapidly lead to corrosion, efficiency losses, and costly downtime if surfaces are not adequately protected.
Together with one of its longest-standing partners and authorized applicators, Donelli Alexo from Italy, SÄKAPHEN has recently completed a demanding project for an international manufacturer of air and gas-related solutions. The objective was to ensure long-term protection of equipment operating in biogas-handling facilities characterized byH₂S and elevated temperatures by applying a high-performance lining on the inner surfaces of the involved plants.
Project specifications
- Client: French manufacturer of industrial blowers
- Operating environment: biogas containing H₂S (average 200 ppm)
- Maximum operating temperature: 140 °C
- Service conditions: continuous exposure to aggressive gases, condensates, and thermal stress
- Type of workpieces: a high number of pumps and rotors with varying dimensions and geometries
- Authorized applicator: Donelli Alexo (Italy)
- SÄKAPHEN product used: Si 14 EG
SÄKAPHEN’s solution
1. The application process
This demanding project was entrusted to Donelli Alexo, a long-standing SÄKAPHEN authorized applicator with solid experience in industrial corrosion protection and heat-cured coating application. Their expertise ensured the correct execution of all project phases in full compliance with SÄKAPHEN’s technical specifications.
The coating process followed SÄKAPHEN’s standard high-quality procedure:
- Detailed preliminary analysis and technical consultation
- Thorough surface preparation with Donelli Alexo’s equipment
- Coating application to achieve the required dry film thickness of 80µm ÷ 100µm, followed by controlled heat curing
- Final quality control, inspection, and documentation preparation.
2. The coating product
To meet the challenging conditions of this biogas-handling application, SÄKAPHEN Si 14 EG, a heat-cured phenolic lining, was selected as the most suitable solution.
In general, Si 14 EG is designed for environments characterized by:
- Acidic exposure and corrosion-prone operating conditions
- High operating temperatures up to 200 °C
- Continuous exposure to condensates and water vapor
- Severe chemical and thermal loads over extended service periods.
Thanks to its exceptional chemical resistance and excellent thermal stability, Si 14 EG ensures durable protection against corrosion and surface attack in biogas-handling processes.
Final results
The application of Si 14 EG delivered excellent performance and met all customer expectations, providing:
- Effective long-term protection in high-H₂S biogas service
- Stable resistance at a 140-°C operating temperature
- Strong reduction of corrosion-related risks
- Increased reliabilityand availability of the equipment
- Extended maintenance intervals
- Excellent return on investment (ROI)
- Maximum safety during continuous plant operation.
